Natural gas emission factor, Australia
Pipeline natural gas burned on your premises: kilograms of CO2-e per gigajoule, by state, from the National Greenhouse Accounts Factors 2025.
| Applies to | Scope | kg CO2-e per GJ |
|---|---|---|
| All states | Scope 1: combustion on site | 51.53 |
| NSW and ACT | Scope 3: upstream supply, metro distribution | 13.10 |
| Victoria | Scope 3: upstream supply, metro distribution | 4.00 |
| Queensland | Scope 3: upstream supply, metro distribution | 8.80 |
| South Australia | Scope 3: upstream supply, metro distribution | 10.70 |
| Western Australia | Scope 3: upstream supply, metro distribution | 4.10 |
| Tasmania | Scope 3: upstream supply, metro distribution | — |
| Northern Territory | Scope 3: upstream supply, metro distribution | — |
Worked example
500,000 MJ in Victoria is 500 GJ, which gives 25,765 kg scope 1 and 2,000 kg scope 3: 27.77 tonnes CO2-e in total.
Notes
Australian gas bills print usage in megajoules (MJ); divide by 1,000 for gigajoules. The workbook splits scope 3 by metro and non-metro distribution; this table uses the metro figure, which differs by at most 7 per cent on the scope 3 part. The workbook publishes no scope 3 figure for Tasmania or the Northern Territory, so gas there is reported as scope 1 only.
